What is the max number of tiles I can link together and have everything work?

That would be a difficult question to answer.

The LED strip doesn't have a maximum, although you'd need a fairly large PSU or even multiple PSU for a large setup. It looks like the LED strip uses 19w per 60 LEDs (I'm guessing at full brightness). Roughly 1w per panel.

The NodeMCU will also have a limit to the number of LEDs it can control individually and the speed it can communicate to each LED is also a limit.

They actually say it's unlimited... However you have two real deciding factors I think.

1. The current going through to power these. You can overcome this by running separate power to different sections maybe. I think the 60 LED 1M length I used is rated at 10A which would be plenty. From what I understand each LED can pull 60ma when producing white at it's brightest. If you are running 20 tiles with 3 LED's in each that would be 3.6 amps.  I would love to try 40 tiles going around my room running off a 10amp supply :-)  maybe some day.

2. Although the LED count is unlimited you are limited by the power of the controller and how many LED's it can communicate with over a period of time. If you're trying to talk to 1000 led's telling each individual one what colour it needs to be then at some point you're going to get slowdown where you need to tell the 1st LED what it needs to be but you are not finished telling the last one yet..  I have no idea on what these limitations are.

You do see vidoes and posts using WS2812S LED's running hundreds and they don't seem to have a problem I think you should be okay with as many as you can print :-)

Let me know if you go for more than 16.. I think it would be nice to have a moodlite record award for the biggest trail.. lol

I can confirm these LEDs add up quickly, especially when run at 100% brigtness. I built aluminum heatsinked strips of APA102s (similar to WS2812 except with a clock pin) with about 430 of these under my kitchen cabinets. I broke the power up into 3 separate sections across the setup to decrease the current as it would have probably burned up the traces in the strips.

I'd love to see someone build these enough of these things to use 400+ but realistically it would be a lot less. I think you could daisy chain quite a few of these but as it grows, you could increased the conductor size for power inside the tile. once the current starts adding up those small servo extension wires will eventually start to drop voltage toward the end, then flickering problems start happening. Either that or the design could be modified to have a power bus with larger wires that pass directly from input to output, the internal LED's of each tile could branch off of that using small wire.

I'm not suggesting any of what is useful, just getting my hypothetical thoughts on paper (screen?)

Based on other dicussions.
Each led at full birght white is rated at 60mA.
If you use 1 LED per side then 60x3 we are talking about .18A per tile so you can power ~5 tiles per 1A on your PSU doing maximum bright.
This is not considering voltage drop (I donīt have so much knowledge on that area).

My setup is a 22 panels, 1 led per side, that in theory draws 3.96A and I am using a 4A PSU without problems yet.
