I've been working on a variant of MoodLites that uses mostly laser cut parts to eliminate long print times.

The design will be optimized to fit my smaller sized laser (k40) and uses 3mm thick materials.

You da man Crimson 13!!

As someone who also owns a mini-Death Star (the K40's bigger 50w brother), I will be taking great interest in this subject.

It will be interesting to see how this could be lasered.

If you don't mind me asking, which specific laser cutter(s) are you planning on using to cut this?  I was going to 3d print parts, but this might be a better way to obtain the parts.

He says he's using a Chinese K40 laser to cut them.

Correct it's a Chinese import k40.  I'm working quite a bit the next week or so.  So I might not get a proof of concept cut out super soon but I'm still working on the design!  The new low-profile design might also bring about some changes to my laser version.

I've got the K40's bigger brother, the SH-G530, it should cut up some moodlite parts like a boss!

This looks great, please be sure to send a link with the updated project plans. I've got a K40 and would love to make these from acryllic, and also cut down on print time.
I'm also imagining using a contrasting colour for the frame.

Nice animation, by the way!

My apologies to those who have been waiting for an update onn the laser cut plans.  Between work and school, life's been pretty busy.  I'm hoping to get version 2 finished in the next few days.

I'm interested in buying a laser cutter. I wasn't able to find this model through google search, do you have a link to it somewhere?
I'd also like to know the difference going from a 40w to 50w means in terms of the machines capabilities. I don't want to derail this posts topic though, so send me a DM please.
